What do a De Beers’ diamond and Calvary Classical School have in common? Two things come to mind.
First, if you attend the CCS benefit gala on May 7, 2016, and participate in our diamond event, you may just go home with a .52 caret Forevermark diamond valued at $4249.95. Goodman & Sons Jewelers has graciously donated this sparkling gem for our fundraiser. Check out the details and our other silent auction items here. Then call the school for your reservation and join us for an inspiring evening at the ballroom on the campus of Christopher Newport University.
While at the gala, you will also hear our guest speaker, Lt. General (Ret.) Josiah Bunting III, former superintendent of Virginia Military Academy and author of six books. General Bunting has spent considerable time contemplating the importance of education. He lays out his thoughts in one of his novels—An Education for Our Time—an imaginative tale of a dying billionaire penning letters to his lawyer with detailed plans for a new and different college for our day.
The business of undergraduate education remains the cultivation of character and mind, of instinct and ability, of leadership and service. It is the way that men should live and behave in our culture and our country that is the proper business of our colleges. I don’t mean as ministers and architects, chemists and executives; I mean as citizens. I set the education of character and virtue at least as high among our obligations as the preparation of intellect for a lifetime of self-education.
To nourish and cultivate their brains, to make them prudently skeptical, imaginative, reasonable thinkers, likely to sustain through their lives the capacity for wonder, for the joy of hearing strange melodies or seeing dappled things, for the hearing of inspirations and intuitions that come unbidden and to make them capable of long periods of sustained thinking—this is education. 1
And that brings us back to the diamond. De Beers’ iconic tagline “A Diamond is Forever” reminds me of these very goals of classical Christian education. They are timeless, priceless, and enduring. They are our mission. Join us in offering this jewel to the Hampton Roads community.
Many thanks to our sponsors for making this year’s Legacy of Learning gala possible. A special note of thanks is due to our gold level sponsors: New Day Office Products and Furnishings, Inc. and TowneBank.
