Welcome Letter PDF Print E-mail
Dear Parents, Friends, Faculty & Staff,

I hope this letter finds you staying cool and enjoying a relaxing summer! The 2007-2008 school year is a mere 2-1/2 weeks away so I wanted to write a note to let you know some of the exciting things we are anticipating in the coming year. The School Board has approved several new ideas for fund raising, so I wanted to present them in writing to you before the next CCSA meeting. This year we have tried to stick to the "no more than three" major fund raisers outlined in the CCSA Policies and Procedures Manual, so as to be less taxing on both parents and children. Many of our regular fund raisers will still be available online at the school website if individuals wanted to continue purchasing Sallie Foster, Entertainment Books, Virginia Diner and other products that provide income to the school.

1) Our annual Jim Snyder Memorial Golf Tournament will be taking place on October 13, 2007. This is the 5th annual event for the school, and has been a pretty good fund raiser in past years. The Golf Tournament has not normally been publicized a great deal for the school, so we really wanted to put this idea in the forefront of the minds of families. On a personal note, I played in the tournament last year after doing not much more with a golf club than playing mini-golf at Professor Hackers in Nags Head. Playing golf may seem daunting if you've never done it before, but it was such a wonderful time. Our team of 4 women (3 of whom had never really played before) had a great time of fellowship and fun. I would encourage you to seriously think about either playing, sponsoring or volunteering with the golf tournament this year as it is only 2 months away. Please download the brochure and encourage your friends, family and co-workers to attend or sponsor.

2) We would like to try a Spell-a-Thon fund raiser in the Spring of 2008. A Spell-a-Thon has become a popular fund raiser for many schools. Students (Parents) seek sponsors per spelling word that the student spells correctly in a spelling test given per class on a designated date. The Spell-a-Thon test might contain 25 spelling words, so a $2 donation per word would generate $50 if the student spelled all correctly. The great thing about this fund raiser is that it has extremely small overhead costs, and can generate as much or as little as a person is willing to donate. Not to mention that students are actually learning as a part of the process.

3) For those of you who attended the CCS Auction in the Spring of last year, you may remember the various pottery and art items that sold well. With that in mind we are pursuing the possibility of having an Art Auction to include art from well-known artists, art created by our CCS students, and other popular auction items such as restaurant and hotel gift certificates. The auction would be smaller in nature than our regular auction, and would be held in conjunction with heavy hors doeuvres or dessert.

These new fund raising ideas will be brought before the CCSA on Thursday evening to be approved and voted upon.

We are also pursuing a new take on the annual bookfair by trying to incorporate more of the grade-level reading lists into the fair and cutting back on the large amount of commercial items that seem to pervade these events.

And, speaking of bookfairs, Barnes & Noble has tentatively scheduled us in for February 2, 2008 to have "Celebrate Calvary Classical School" day. Barnes & Noble has events like these for schools on a regular basis to help promote the school and to raise funds. This will be a great promotional day for CCS to display our art (which we can then sell at the art auction), have "Reading Time with the Principal", demonstrate our wonderful handbell talents, purchase books with a portion of the proceeds going to Calvary, and spread the general word about Calvary to the regular store visitors.

Finally, we would encourage you to participate in the upcoming events that are scheduled for August:
August 11, 8 am - 12 pm: Help clean up the school and get classrooms ready for the new year
August 23, 6 - 7:30pm: CCSA meeting and welcome back students
August 25, 4-8pm: Welcome back picnic at the school. Please RSVP using this link and bring either a side dish or a dessert, lawn chairs and/or blankets to sit on. Fried chicken, BBQ and drinks will be provided.

Please be in prayer even now as we anticipate the coming school year. As you make school-related preparations for your child please remember the CCS faculty and staff in your prayers as they make final preparations as well. Please remember to support your child's school by being willing to volunteer in some capacity throughout the year. At the school picnic on the 25th we hope to have numerous sign-up sheets for opportunities for families to contribute their time and talents to various needs and/or events during the year.

Thank you for your time in reading this detailed letter and please don't hesitate to contact me with your thoughts, suggestions, needs or concerns. Remember the CCSA is YOUR association!

In Christ,
Rebekah Hughes
CCSA President
